are smoked much more rarely in France, Italy, Great Britain, and the United

not only between urban and rural areas but also between occupational and other
social groups is shown in table 2 from data collected in Switzerland by Gsell
and Jung (3). Only 15% of urban factory workers but as many as 36% of rural
nonfarmers and 75% of farmers were smoking cigars and/or pipe at the time of the
investigation. Tables 1b and 3 show time trends, which were significant if older
and more recent studies are compared. While cigarette production in Switzerland
more than doubled during the 1960's and cigar and cigarillo production increased
by some 50%, production of pipe tobacco has rapidly declined.
